Traditional car competitions usually charged several pounds per entry and relied on a smaller group of regular players. With tighter budgets and audiences becoming tired of the same format, operators began trying something different.
Instead of selling a few thousand expensive tickets, they now sell hundreds of thousands of low-cost entries, promoted heavily through social media. A few pence feels like very little risk, while bundles such as 100 entries for £5 encourage people to buy more than one ticket.

It all comes down to volume. If a car is worth £30,000 and tickets cost 5p, the operator must sell 600,000 entries just to cover the prize.
